Sharepoint 2007 is in Beta 2 now and is projected to be released at the beginning of the year but now is the time to start looking at the new features that SharePoint 2007 and WSS V3.0 will contain.

Below are some of the highlights of the new features that SharePoint 2007 and WSS V3.0 will contain.

Site columns provide a central, reusable model for column definition.

When you create a site column, each list that uses this column has the same definition, and you do not have to do the tedious work of reproducing the column in each list. Additionally, site columns provide you with the simplicity of a single maintenance point. For instance, you can create a status site column, which may contain multiple choices of an enterprise’s specific statuses, and implement the column in dozens of project master lists across the site collection. If you add a new status, you can modify the site column instead of having to modify each list that contains a status column.

Content types are a core concept used throughout the functionality and services offered in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3) and are designed to help users organize their SharePoint content in a more meaningful way. A content type is a reusable collection of settings you want to apply to a certain category of content.

Content types enable you to manage the metadata and behaviors of a document or item type in a centralized, reusable way. For example, consider the following two types of documents: software specifications and legal contracts. You might want to store documents of those two types in the same SharePoint document library. However, the metadata you would want to gather and store about each of these document types would be quite different. In addition, you would likely want to assign different workflows and retention policies to the two types of documents. Content types enable you to store multiple types of content in the same SharePoint library or list. In the preceding example, you could define two content types, named Specification and Contract. Each content type would include different columns for gathering and storing item metadata and would have different workflows and policies. Yet items of both content types could be stored in the same SharePoint document library.

Recycle bins, or undelete functionality, is another important improvement that has been added in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3). This functionality is available in both lists and document libraries. Deleting an item from a list triggers a multilevel series of events. First, the item is sent to a Web-level recycling bin. From here, the item can be undeleted by any individual who has been given appropriate rights. When the item is deleted from this bin, the item is sent to a second recycling bin, controlled by the site administrator.

Among the design features of this bin are timers that allow you to automate the removal of old documents. For example, an administrator may decide that the vast majority of requests for item restores happen within the first 90 days. In this scenario, the administrator may set the timer such that items older than 90 days are permanently deleted.

RSS has become a standard way of aggregating content from the Web. For more information on RSS in Microsoft Windows Code Name “Longhorn,” see the technical article RSS Support in Longhorn on Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN). By integrating RSS feeds for each SharePoint list, Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3) provides a push mechanism for forwarding information to end users.

Folders, one of the popular features from document libraries in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 2), is now also available in lists. Folders allow further segregation of content within a single list, adding another level of versatility. One of the interesting features of folders is the ability to assign metadata to a folder. This creates a rich content holder that contains child content, while appearing as more than a container. Essentially, this allows the folder to function as a separate, but fully functional, item type. An example of this can be seen in Windows SharePoint Services discussion boards. Each top-level discussion is, in fact, a folder with metadata, containing one to n child objects. By modifying the appearance of the folder, an end user can visualize the folder as another list item rather than as a container. You can use this model in custom lists to create a dynamic parent/child list. Many business applications require rich container objects, for which a parent object has both important data concerning itself, and one to n children with similar data. Normally, you deal with this challenge by using lists in which a parent, or master, list selection drives the display of a child, or detail, list.

Because you can now assign metadata to folders in a SharePoint list, you can achieve similar functionality with a single list.

Consider an Orders list, for example. You could provision a folder as an order, and then assign metadata to it, such as order number, customer, and shipment method. By doing so, you can make the folder mimic the master list functionality. You can then fill the folder with order items list items, each with its own metadata, such as item number, description, and price. Now you have the rich functionality of a master/detail list within a single list.

List Indexing. Integral to the idea of using Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services as a platform is the ability to use its storage containers, specifically lists and document libraries, for application storage. However, a number of limitations restricted the true use of these containers in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 2). One of the problems was the inability to handle large lists. As lists began to grow, both in metadata and list items, the mechanisms built into lists became clunky and inefficient.

A key goal within Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3) was to fix these restrictions and create a rich storage model with performance capable of supporting applications, both external and those built upon the Windows SharePoint Services platform. One of the key ways that Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3) solves this issue is to include indexing on columns. By allowing a column to be indexed, and stored as a simple name/value pair in a separate database, access to specific items in large lists is significantly improved. These kinds of performance improvements allow SharePoint lists to become true data stores, capable of supporting external applications as well as simple team sites.For example, with an Orders list, you could provision a folder as an order and then assign metadata to it, such as order number, customer, and shipment method. Consider that by indexing the order number column, access to specific items in the list by an external request becomes significantly cheaper.

Another scenario is an external application with hundreds of thousands of records. Previously, your Web application could not use a SharePoint list as a storage device. With the inclusion of indexing on columns, performance increases allow this architecture. By using Windows SharePoint Services storage, the standard features of the platform, such as views, alerts, and RSS, can now be used as a data store explorer for internal use in simple team sites.

Cross-List Queries – Another improvement made with the idea of using Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services storage more effectively is cross-list queries. Cross-list queries allow you to use the SPQuery object to query all the lists within a Web or site collection. Previously, you had to iterate through the parent objects to obtain a collection of SPList objects, query the list to return the items, and then build your own collection of list items from the multiple lists. This exercise was not only tedious and redundant but expensive. Cross-list queries allow you to take advantage of the efficiencies built into the SPQuery functionality in a number of additional scenarios. Cross-list queries provide a rich querying capability, similar to SQL queries, within SharePoint. Among the many possible scenarios this functionality allows is the numerous aggregation scenarios commonly requested by end users.

List Items. Several improvements in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3) are implemented on the item level rather than on the entire list. The following is a list of several important new features.

Per-Item Security Item-level security is certain to be a popular new feature in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3). List and document libraries now feature the ability to set roles on each item, rather than simply at the lists level. In a developer scenario, if you combine per-item security with other features, such as list events or extensible field types, you could use per-item security to change who has access to an item, based upon an entry in another field. For example, a change to the status of an item could trigger a change in who has the ability to edit the item.

Versioning In Windows SharePoint Services (version 2), only document libraries allowed versioning, and then only a major version would be created. This basic functionality did not match the workflow normally associated with documents; namely, the creation and edit process when a document is in draft version, and then the publishing of a document to public status. Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3) offers a new, richer versioning model. This model includes both major and minor versions, and versioning within lists as well as document libraries. In addition, major and minor versions can have different security, allowing separate draft and public version workflows. In a developer scenario, versions are associated with a rich event model that allows numerous scenarios, including custom workflows, item validation, and information propagation.

Required Checkout In Windows SharePoint Services V2, users could modify documents without checking those documents out from a document library. This allowed multiple users to edit the same document, and left a complicated, poorly understood merge/overwrite scenario. In Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3), document edits are allowed only when the document has been checked out. This forced checkout defines a clear owner model and simplifies merging of changes.

Workflows In Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3), a workflow allows you to attach a business process to items in SharePoint Products and Technologies. This process can control almost any aspect of an item in SharePoint Products and Technologies, including the lifecycle of that item. For example, you could create a simple workflow that routes a document to a series of users for approval.

Workflows can be as simple or complex as your business processes require. You can create workflows that the user initiates, or workflows that SharePoint Products and Technologies automatically initiate based on some event, such as when an item is created or changed. In addition, your workflows can interact directly with the user through workflow forms. Workflow forms enable you to gather information from the user at each stage of the workflow. You can create your workflow to interact with the user through the standard SharePoint Products and Technologies browser-based interface, through workflow forms in Microsoft Office client applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, or even through your own custom applications. Workflows are available to end users at the list or document library level.

Workflows can also be added to content types. Multiple workflows may be available for an item. In addition, multiple workflows can run simultaneously on the same item, but only one instance of a specific workflow type can run on a specific item at any given time. For example, you might have two workflows, “SpecReview” and “LegalReview,” available for a specific content type, “Specification.” Although both workflows can run simultaneously on a specific item of the “Specification” content type, you can’t have two instances of the “LegalReview” workflow running on the same item at the same time.

Events are key to transforming Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services into a true developer platform.

Events enable first and third parties to hook into Windows SharePoint Services behaviors and override default behaviors. Events fall into two major categories:

List events Core events, including changes, additions, and removals of list items and list columns (schema changes) Simple site events Deletion of sites and site collections

Events are either synchronous “before” events, denoted by the “XYZing” name format, or asynchronous “after” events, denoted by the “ABCed” name format. Event receivers can be registered, through the “Features” feature, with an Item, a List, a Web, or a Content Type. For example, an event receiver that ensures a document always has a copyright in the footer can be associated with a central Content Type and pushed down to all document libraries associated with that type. As they do in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 2), developers can override and extend the event handler method. A new sequence number parameter allows for control of the firing order of multiple events.

Features – Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (version 3) contains a new structure called a “feature.” A “feature” is an end-user-oriented container of one or more elements. An element is an atomic Windows SharePoint Services concept. The “feature” is defined in an XML format, similar to other existing SharePoint structures. Each “feature” definition is a set of XML files. Many items that were previously contained within a site definition in Windows SharePoint Services (version 2) are now able to fit as an element. In Windows SharePoint Services (version 3), a SharePoint site definition is transformed into a list of “features” plus a layout page and a master page. The goal is that any templated SharePoint site can be transformed into another templated SharePoint site simply by having the administrator toggle features on the site and possibly switch the layout page or master page. Upgrading a Windows SharePoint Services V2 site definition to a Windows SharePoint Services V3 site is a process of breaking the XML files (such as ONET.XML) into small chunks, componentizing them into arbitrary components, and then packaging them as a Windows SharePoint Services V3 “feature” and creating a workspace template that uses those “features.”

Everyone is familiar with the traditional models for making money. There are a few options available: Either you work for somebody as an employee, or you work as a self-employer, or you run some sort of business. Each of these has their own sets of advantages and disadvantages to weigh up. But they all generally imply that you will be actively working for a number of specified hours every week, and that you get paid accordingly. You are normally confined to working from a specific location, and more often than not this is not from your home which leads to one of the headaches of modern day living: commuting.

Recent polls have shown that the trend has been shifting gradually towards a better balance between work and lifestyle over the last few decades. People don’t want to spend their precious free time commuting to and from work. And then once at work they don’t want to work for a boss that tells them what they have to do, and how they should dress to get it done. People want to be able to work based from home and be in charge of their own time management. They want to spend more time with their families. More and more mothers want to be able to create some sort of income by working from home whilst looking after children.

And so was born the alternative lifestyle business opportunities.

There are numerous ads out for opportunities working from home. And now that just about every household has a PC and is connected to the internet, there is absolutely no reason why people should not be able to work from home on-line. And that means choosing the hours that you want to work, which frees up time that can be spent on improving your lifestyle.

Unfortunately with all of the advertised alternative lifestyle business opportunities also came a lot of scams and opportunities that will lose you money. There are the MLM (multilevel marketing) opportunities that, even though not all pyramid schemes, are still dependent on you finding more people to join the network in order for it to become profitable. You don’t promote a product as such. You promote a system that benefits from you doing the head-hunting for it. And even though these MLM opportunities do reward you for your efforts, the reward is seldom proportional to the effort. But they sell the opportunity as work based from home and thereby generate the interest.

Then there are all the other advertisements that are trying to sell you opportunities that, once bought, are simply not as lucrative as they are made out to be. They promise you untold wealth for completing online surveys or doing data entry work, and they all sell themselves to you on your desire to work from home on-line to improve your lifestyle. But almost without fail you will have to pay a fee to join their scheme. Some of them even have the nerve to say that they charge a fee to separate those that are serious about the opportunities from those that are not! But once joined you will seldom find that the opportunity is as lucrative as it was made to sound originally.

The good news, however, is that there are opportunities available out there that are honest and do work. As with all other business models, they require hard work to set up but they also do provide returns. And above all, these returns are proportional to your effort. But the thing to understand is that there is no one “opportunity” that, once you’ve joined, will make you earn a reasonable living from home.

So how do you know the difference between good opportunities and money wasters?

The answer is simple. In the same way that you know whether a traditional business opportunity is a good or a bad one: you have to do proper research. You have to understand that there is no such thing as a “get-rich-quick-by-working-a-few-hours-a-week-from-home” scheme using the internet. You have to educate yourself in how online business models work as apposed to traditional business models. Understanding the internet as medium for business opportunities is the only way for you to be able to identify true alternative lifestyle business opportunities as they present themselves.

There is plenty of material available on the subject on the internet. And more often than not there is a price attached to these (let’s be honest, you have to spend some money to make some money). But the difference here is that investing in this research offers you something in return for your money that you can utilize to start your business.

And how do you know which research material to invest in?

Again you do this by doing proper research on the material itself. Before you buy a book on home decoration, for example, you do some research on that book, don’t you? You read reviews about it and follow recommendations from trusted sources. Well the same is true for reference material regarding business opportunities on the internet.

And once you’re properly equipped with the knowledge, well the rest is, as they say, history.

I know you probably think it sounds like I’m exaggerating when I tell you I make up to $2,778.00 a day sitting at my computer.

As crazy at it sounds, I actually do it on a regular basis and I only spend a couple hours a day at my computer. And I really believe that anyone over the age of 9 or 10 years old can follow my example and do exactly what I’m doing. I know a few secrets and I’m about to reveal them to you in the pages ahead. Of course I can’t and won’t guarantee that you’ll make the exact same number of dollars I make everyday, but what I can do is tell you how I do it. I’ll reveal some of my most confidential secrets, tips and tricks along with a complete money-making system that produces a serious income!

How Much Money Do You Really Want To Make?

My average income per day as I sit here writing this book for you is averaging just above $2,700.00 per day. Some days I make more than that, other days I make less.

As of October, 2004 I’ve generated over 2.4 million dollars using my internet marketing system. Now that’s gross, not net, but at least close to half of that is net(money that I got to keep.) But I don’t want to sit here like all those other internet marketing gurus that tell you over and over how they’re millionaires.

No instead I’d rather just show you a few of my actual bank statements from my business checking account so you can see my total monthly and yearly deposits for yourself. While others just talk, I offer proof!

These days it seems like everyone is flapping their lips trying to convince us of how much money they make. Don’t listen to what they say. Ask for proof! Ask them to show you actual bank statements like I do. Then watch how fast they try to make up excuses about why they can’t show you their bank statements. They’ll say things like: “Oh I can’t show you my bank statement because that’s confidential.” And the only reason they won’t show you their bank statement is because you’d laugh if you saw most of them. That’s why they keep it so confidential. But I believe anyone who is really making a serious internet income will be more than happy to show you a simple bank statement as proof.

So I’m going to show you one of my actual bank statements just so you’ll know I’m the real thing and not one of those phonies. Click here to see one of my bank statements from a single month. Keep in mind, that’s only one of my bank accounts. I have two more business checking accounts that also have extremely large deposits going into them every week. Yes, I make a good solid living and I’m about to show you most of the keys to my income so you can start making the same kind of cash-flow for yourself.

Lets talk about what this book is NOT

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve actually made some money with MLM but I just think most people never find success with MLM and I have found a much easier way to make money. And with this system, you never have to meet with anyone face-to-face and you never have to do any real selling. This system always sells itself so you just collect the checks! Since most of the work is automated in this system, you’ll only need to sit at your computer for about an hour a day! In fact, even people that don’t own a computer can use this system so the market is huge for this!

Sure, we used to drive flashy luxury cars and dress like movie stars, but we soon learned that people would often try to use us for our money. Yah, every other day someone else would be asking us for a loan or just pleading for us to help by donating some money to them. Sure, they’d ask for a “Loan” but nobody ever paid me back anyway, so that’s why I use the word “Donation.” Because when you’re rich everyone thinks you should just hand out money to every Tom, Dick, and Ha!

So Mindy and I no longer try to impress anyone with expensive toys. But the main point I’m trying to make is that every word written in this book is completely true. I Didn’t Go To College

I mostly screwed around in school so I never had any interest in going to college. With no degree, I wound up having to do what I call “Real Work.” And when I say “Real Work” I’m talking about jobs such as stock person, grocery bagger, cashier, dept. store sales person, professional cleaner, etc. And when I say I did some cleaning I don’t just mean dusting. I cleaned windows, toilets, floors, tiles, and even cars. At one time, I was even cleaning up after a demolition crew. They smashed stuff up, and I had to walk through all the dust and carry out the garbage.

But I don’t want to bore you with all the details of all the many odd jobs I had. I just want to let you know that I wasn’t born rich and that I actually shed blood, sweat, and tears just trying to live on my own. Those jobs all had one thing in common. They were all “Real Work” and I hated every minute while watching the clock and waiting for the end of the day to come.

It didn’t take me long to realize I wasn’t meant to have a boss in life. I didn’t like taking orders back then and I still don’t like taking orders now. And that’s part of the reason why I listed so many different jobs of mine up above. I used to get sick and tired of jobs faster than most people. So I’d end up getting fired or quitting sometimes after only one week of working. There were a few occasions where I just walked off a job without even telling anyone I was leaving and never coming back! I would seriously just wait until nobody was paying attention to me and I’d just walk right out the front door, get in my car and drive home. Home was where I like to be. Home was a place where I felt safe, relaxed, and happy.

Yes, I was really good at getting jobs, but not so good at staying with them and being committed to them. Home was just such a better place to be. So looking back, it’s really no surprise that one day after walking off a job, I stopped at a computer store and bought a cheap computer with money I didn’t have. I had one credit card left that wasn’t over it’s limit and I used that one credit card to live off of for the next 3 weeks while I sat at that computer determined to figure out how to make it spit out dollar bills.

No Luck! For over a year I tried every internet money-making opportunity I could get my hands on. But I just kept racking up more debt. A year later, I was $46,735 in debt and desperately struggling. Any sane person would have gone out and gotten a job. But to me, a job was not an option. I seriously would have rather been in prison than had a job. At least in prison you can sit down and relax. Ok, well on second thought, I wouldn’t want to be in prison either. But I think you’re starting to understand just how much I hated having a regular job. Having a boss seemed as close to a prison sentence as I can imagine.

So I just sat at that computer all day long and I answered as many of those “opportunity ads” you see in the back of small business magazines as I could find. I tried every money-making scheme that I came across. If you sold a get-rich-quick scheme, I would have been an easy sale for you at that time.

I tried offline businesses as well as online businesses, but they always turned out to be nothing but lies. And I kept falling for every one of them. It was official. I was an opportunity junkie. If there was such a thing as opportunity junkies anonymous, I probably needed to be there.

But as bad as things got, I was one stubborn son-of-a-gun! I knew I’d rather be homeless than work a day job. At least I knew what I didn’t want to do. Looking back, knowing what I didn’t want was actually a step in the right direction. So I just kept on trying more business opportunities. I tried them all. I experimented with different ways of doing them and I tested and re-tested each one.

When you look at just how pitiful my life was at that time and how bad things were turning out, it’s actually good news for you. If I can suddenly bring in $437,540.00 after being down so low then you know you can do it too! As you continue reading, you’re going to see just how easy this really is. Remember, I’m not a lucky person and what I was about to discover wasn’t luck. I discovered a recipe for success. Yes sireee, I had found the exact ingredients for a serious cash income!

There are a few reasons why you’re likely to use this system and make more money, faster than when I got started. Who knows, you may even do better than me later on too!

But before I ever hit it big, things kept getting worse while I was struggling to avoid losing my apartment back then. The “Simple” Part of Internet Marketing

Researching home based business opportunities on the internet?

Fasten your safety belt and stock up on the Dramamine—better yet get a helmet and a NASCAR crash suit too, because it’s a wild ride and you’re likely to spin out or hit the wall more than once. In the world of Too Good to be True, online moneymaking opportunities have got to be the big dog on the street these days. “Bigger than television advertising?”, you ask. In a sense, yes, because online you are more pro-actively and interactively engaged in seeking solutions. Yeah, the couch potato with his remote finally dons cape and tights and heads for cyberspace seeking truth, justice and the American Way!!.

I started off opting into a couple multilevel marketing opportunities, you know, vitamins and that sort of stuff. This wasn’t totally foreign to me, having been involved (unsuccessfully) with MLM a number of years ago. Like many people, I’m interested in ways to supplement my diet and maintain good health. The added element of earning extra income is also appealing— and why wouldn’t it be? However, discovering that most of your family and friends, “warm market”, just don’t share your excitement, the business aspect ends up in a carton downstairs, under the Christmas decorations.

The idea of marketing on the internet is what drew (sucked?) me back into another attempt at MLM or “network marketing”, as some now prefer calling it. The industry was ready for me too, with team replicated websites, backoffices, promo materials for order, e-mail autoresponders, online conference rooms, you name it. And all I had to do was “simply send people to my website…” and everything would roll along from there. Sounded good to me. So, after setting up everything, including getting a healthy supply of nutritional supplements AND an autoship account for monthly re-stocks, I once again found myself facing my warm market– only this time it was, “Hey, check out my cool website!”, followed by, “hmm…who else is gonna check out my website?” Well, my spiffy back office also included a link to a source for pre-qualified sales leads which I could purchase in bulk, at quantity pricing of a mere few bucks per lead. I should expect to get 10 interested prospect “sign-ups”out of every 100 leads—after all, “Remember, it’s a numbers game Sparky”.

My team training also heavily promoted meeting people everyday and having weekly meetings in my home, where everyone would watch a DVD introducing our revolutionary new product and compensation plan. Now, I happen to live in a rural area with a very wired Chihuahua (actually it’s my wife’s). Yeah, I know, that’s my problem, so what? But as you may well imagine, I wasn’t terribly excited about roaming the neighboring towns, dropping cards and inviting people to my humble “out in the boonies” abode for a special DVD presentation, including additional background soundtrack provided by “Pancho Psycho”, barricaded in the bedroom, shredding up the carpet.

AND ANYWAY, WHERE EXACTLY WAS THE INTERNET MARKETING SIDE OF ALL THIS!!??

That’s when I decided to go back online and surf my way to the answers—in cape and tights, of course. The number of “How to” websites, capture pages and sales letters on the web, dealing with making money online is simply mind boggling. It becomes Kryptonite after awhile. I went through such a mind numbing number of sites, it nearly put me in a carton downstairs under the Christmas decorations– OR to quote Chris Farley as my favorite motivational speaker, Matt Foley, ӅIN A VAN, DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!”. But interestingly enough, after awhile, one also realizes there isn’t actually a lot of different information out there; just a lot of different people duplicating similar stuff in very similar formats, often with just enough variation to make it “their stuff”– and mostly dealing with how to sell an information product which reveals how to sell an information product, etc., ad infinitum. Not exactly a unique new thing here. It gets kinda like Rap music or fast food chains after awhile. I was getting supersized, yet still starved for real nutrition.

Another key that I (Mr. Thick and Naïve) finally figured out, is that it’s all about getting traffic, driving traffic and acquiring a prospect base you can continue to market to. That’s extremely important to know, because I don’t know how many times I read Ӆ all ya gotta do is ‘simply’ send people to the website… and (this or that system) will take it from there”. That “simple” part was always hanging me up. What was so simple about it? That seemed to be the big secret in the world of, “Earn six figures weekly working 20 minutes a dayŔ or is it “20 minutes a week”? I forget.

But there is good news… and I promise it has nothing to do with saving you a bunch of money on your car insurance. It helped me to finally realize that the basic concepts of both real estate and general marketing, totally apply to internet marketing. There’s the old real estate adage: “LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION” and the marketing law of POSITIONING– that deals with appealing to what is already in the mind of your prospect or niche. In other words, “what do people want and where can they get it?”. Search engine function, i.e. Google in particular, really reflects the mind and interests of the people, and thus reveals positioning extremely well and so indicates where you’ll need to locate your site and/or ads in order for them to be seen. Location and Positioning laws are totally embracive of one another online. In the Information Age, the real estate is WORDS. For proof of this, just go to Ebay and search “domain names”. Many have said that the best investment is real estate. “Virtual Estate” shares the characteristic of land because information requires prime location to be marketable.

Consider that regardless of how well either McDonalds or Starbucks are positioned in the mind of the marketplace, any of these establishments located out in the middle of a swamp, will fail. On the other hand, putting a Bill’s Burger Bonanza at the corner of a major intersection greatly assists the survival of Bill’s establishment, regardless of his lower than McDonalds position in the public mind.

And by the way, that really cool replicated website, your MLM team gave you is way out in the swamp. It’s like an unlisted phone number that Ed McMahon will never call.

Now, I want to take a moment to give due respect to the successful marketers out there, whether they are: 1) MLM’s building relationships and promoting wellness, 2) Affiliate Marketers working to promote the products of others or 3) Information Marketers helping others to improve their standard of living. The internet presents a huge window of opportunity for people who, if they conduct their activities ethically, will create and add value to our society and economy. Most of these folks work very hard.

There are many innovative resources out there to assist those considering internet marketing. They’re available in many different packages, with varying levels of content in a broad cost spectrum.

Ultimately, you will find these resources most beneficial to the degree that they assist your understanding of positioning and methods of locating, generating, driving and preserving traffic. Your products and income depend on developing the above. All the other bells and whistles are icing on the cake. First, you need the cake. Make sure the internet marketing resource you choose will show you how to bake that cake. Don’t ever accept, Ӆyou simply send people to your websiteŔ, because if you don’t already have that part down, you could be flying into the Twilight Zone.

In this article, I’m revealing six powerful secret psychological tricks that you can use to increase the effectiveness of your advertising and marketing. What if you don’t sell anything? Should you ignore this information?

You ARE selling something. Whether you are a Real Estate agent selling multi-million dollar homes, or a worker trying to sell your boss on the idea that you are a valuable employee, everybody is selling something. So it would be wise to learn these secret tricks and use them to achieve your own personal success.

The secret psychological tricks that I am going to reveal are not really secret. They have been used by shrewed salesman for millenium. Their existence was revealed back in 1984 by Dr. Robert Cialdini in his book “Influence : The Psychology of Persuasion”.

You will recognize these tricks being used everywhere in advertising today. Now you will be able to put them to use to enhance your own personal success.

Psychological Selling Trick Number 1: Reciprocity

Reciprocity works like this: you give someone something of value for free. That individual feels an obligation to return the favor. Reciprocity is a very powerful principle.

To use reciprocity as a marketing tool, you give people something of value for free, they reciprocate by purchasing your product or service. But you would be surprised how many advertisers totally blow it. Either they don’t understand the concept of “free”, or they don’t have total faith in the principle of reciprocity.

For example, consider the offer “get a free camera when you subscribe to our magazine for two years.” That’s not free. Or, “free installation with a one year commitment.” That’s not free. The customer is paying with an obligation. No sale.

Consider the offer,”receive the latest issue of our magazine absolutely free. No bill will be sent.” If the prospective customer finds the magazine to be of value, they feel an obligation to subscribe. Or, “one month of free Internet service. No credit card required.” If the Internet service performs well, the prospective customer feels an obligation to sign up.

The trick is to create something that has high perceived value to a prospective customer, but costs you little or nothing to produce. Free information is a good example. Here again many advertisers totally blow it. The free information turns out to be nothing more than blatant advertising.

Free samples of your product or service is another good example. Again, many businesses blow it. They either produce a cheaper version of their product to use as free samples, or they use the free sample campaign as a means to dump reject product.

The largest Internet Service Provider is well known for giving away hundreds of hours of service for free. No credit card required. The largest cookie company is famous for giving away free cookies. Reciprocity is a very powerful marketing strategy.

Psychological Selling Trick Number 2: Scarcity

Scarcity works like this: There is a limited amount of the item available. After those are gone, the item will not be available. “urgency” implies Scarcity. For example, “this offer will be honored only for a limited time”.

The effectiveness of the scarcity principle is well demonstrated by the large segment of the population involved in pursuing antiques, collectibles, and memorabilia simply because these items are scarce. Scarcity is often contrived, as when a company produces a “limited edition”.

For example, when Disney releases a limit edition of one of its classic stories – yes, limited to a production of more copies than they could ever possibly sell – then it goes in the “vault”. And how fortunate we’ll be a few years from now when they decide to do us the favor of taking it back out of the vault.

Note: Manufactured items, especially DVDs and CD-ROMs, cannot be “scarce”. It’s a simple matter to put the manufacturing dies back into production. All scarcities of manufactured items are contrived.

One popular incarnation of scarcity is the “going out of business sale”. Customers somehow don’t pick up on the fact that the mark-downs are not that great, or that the store has new merchandise coming in the back door to take advantage of the increase in traffic.

Scarcity is a very powerful marketing tool. There are many ways to contrive scarcity. You can create a limited edition, or for items like information products, scarcity can exist in the form of urgency by creating a limited time offer.

Psychological Selling Trick Number 3: Commitment

Commitment involves getting a prospective customer to take a tiny step towards a goal. For example, you might get them to request free information, or fill out a survey. When the prospective customer takes that first step, they have made a commitment, however tentative, towards the goal you have set out for them. They are likely to take another step.

One example of this process is the “two step” method used in mail order. When a mail order marketer runs an advertisement, they don’t even try to sell the product. Instead, the advertisement offers free information. A prospective customer makes that first commitment towards purchasing the product by requesting the free information. The free information they receive is designed to entice them to take the next step.

Another example of using commitment as a marketing tool is a survey. By checking a few boxes and answering a few questions, a prospective customer takes that first step towards a commitment. The result they receive from the survey is designed to entice them to take the next step.

Yet another example of using commitment as a marketing tool is a lottery. For example, people enter their name and address on a ticket for a chance to win a new car. A salesman uses that information to contact them. By entering their name and address on the lottery ticket, the individual has made a commitment to own that new car.

The most common example of the principle of commitment are those long-winded full page advertisements in magazines. The prospective customer invests a great deal of time reading through the entire advertisement. That investment of time represents a commitment. They are likely to take the next step, responding to the advertisement.

To use the psychological power of commitment in your advertising, don’t try to sell your product or service in your ad. Instead, use a survey, contest, or free information to get a prospective customer to make that first step towards a commitment to purchase your product.

Psychological Selling Trick Number 4: Consensus

Consensus involves getting prospective customers to believe that “everybody’s doing it”. Everybody is just waiting in line to purchase your product. Everybody can’t be wrong, so the product must be fantastic!

Of course you’re smart enough to know that everybody CAN be wrong. Everybody thought that SUVs were safe vehicles (they roll over). Everybody thought Enron was a great investment (it went bankrupt). Everybody thought Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (well maybe not everybody). You’re an independent thinker.

Here are some examples of headlines using the consensus principle: “It’s the new sensation crossing the country”, “People are signing up in droves”, “People just can’t get enough of them”, “Record sales”, “Unbelievable response!” and “Join millions of smart consumers”. Combine this with a stock photograph of a large group of people, a long line of people, or a crowd of people, and you have a powerful consensus message.

Note: Many people don’t think they’re having fun unless they’re in a large, noisy crowd. Unfortunately, every large crowd contains a few lunatics. When things go wrong, the crowd stampedes and people get hurt, or killed. When I see a large crowd, I head the other way.

Fortuately, most people are not independent thinkers. They act like a herd of cattle. Use the consensus principle in your advertising, and people, like lemmings headed for the sea, will come in waves to buy your product.

Psychological Selling Trick Number 5: Authority

Authority involves getting prospective customers to believe that someone who is knowledgeable or famous uses your product or service. If a knowledgeable or famous person uses your product, then it must be fantastic!

The bigger the authority, the more powerful the advertising message will be. For example, doctors are authorities. “Most doctors prescribe Tylenol for arthritis pain”. Large organizations are authorities. “The National Heart Association says – Quaker oatmeal is good for your heart.” The Federal Government is an authority. “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says whole wheat bread is part of a complete diet”. If only we could think of a way to use God as an authority!

Here’s how to use the principle of authority in advertising: search the Internet for any references to your product or service. Find an article that alludes to your product being of value. For example, let’s say you sell black T-shirts. You find an article by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that says “bees are attracted to bright colored clothing”. Your copy: “The U.S. Department of Agriculture that says my T-shirts protect you from attack by stinging insects.”

Most advertising using the authority principle is taken out of context and exaggerated. Some advertising uses totally fake authorities. “My dog biscuits are recommended by the International Association of Dog Nutritionists” (an organization I started last week). Some advertising uses a “study” as an authority. “A recent study found that my lemonade tastes better than any other brand” (my mother liked it better).

I don’t recommend that you use a fake organization, a fake study, or take information out of context or exaggerate, but if you can locate a legitimate authority or study related in any way to your product and quote it without exaggeration, you will have a powerful authority message.

Psychological Selling Trick Number 6: Greed

Greed involves taking advantage of many peoples belief that there is a secret short cut to wealth. They believe that wealthy people didn’t earn their wealth, instead they know a “secret”.

Note: I am not recommending that you use the principle of greed because it is used by unethical scammers. I’m simply informing you of it’s existence in order to make this series of articles complete.

The simplest method of using the principle of greed is the chain letter. You have no doubt received a chain letter at some point. A chain letter contains a chart specifying the massive amounts of money the recipient will get when they follow the instructions. The first instruction is to send money.

The multi-level or network marketing scheme works similar to a chain letter. The prospective recruit gets a chart showing the massive amounts of money they will receive when they join the network. After parting with their money, the victim is instructed to con their friends and relatives into joining.

Another method of using the principle of greed is the lottery or casino. The odds of winning most lotteries are about the same whether you buy a ticket or not. A casino allocates only a tiny portion of it’s customers money to winnings in order to create the illusion that the odds of winning are good. Many people don’t understand statistics. In their mind, the phrase “win a million dollars” translates into “get a million dollars”.

Another example of the principle of greed is the business opportunity scam. We know it works because successful scammers invest millions to run business opportunity infomercials, and they make hundreds of millions in profits. They prey on people who believe there is a secret short cut to wealth. The scammers think people who fall for their scam are stupid, lazy, and greedy, so they deserve to get ripped off.

The way to use the principle of greed is to contrive a “secret plan”. Run an ad describing how the plan requires absolutely no work to make massive amounts of money. Include a few bogus testimonials and a legitimate looking chart that shows the massive amount of money the plan will bring. Some scammers include pictures of fake checks or fake bank statements.

Never divulge any details of the plan in the ad. The prospective customer is required to send money to get the plan. The typical plan instructs the purchaser to run the same scam.

The principle of greed is very powerful. People who have been ripped of by this scam a thousand times before will, like hypnotized zombies, send you their money. They think THIS TIME they will receive the REAL secret plan.
