1- Rushing the conversation for the quick sale is a huge mistake.
When networking there needs to be a bigger vision of how things work. If the focus is on the immediate sale, you may end up ruining that contact. Being in a hurry will close the doors to future people that they could refer to you. Instead of “selling” to the person, focus on developing a long term friendship. This will bring positive results for everyone.
2- One of the biggest mishaps when networking is trying to act like a “know it all”.
No one likes proud and arrogant individuals. Unfortunately some professionals believe that in order to be perceived as an expert they need to talk about their knowledge all the time. They tend to be overbearing in conversations and never admit to shortcomings. Don’t make the same blunders as these “networking train wrecks”.
Being humble goes a long way when creating connections with others.
Don’t be afraid to admit that you might be wrong about something. Many people have a hard time apologizing. If you “stick your foot in your mouth”, don’t hesitate to say that you’re sorry. By adopting the attitude that you can learn from others, you will go much further in your relationships.
