Contrary to what some people believe, when networking, you shouldn’t be afraid to be more personable. There’s so much competition in the networking arena that if you don’t stand out, you simply won’t be remembered. In an attempt to be “business like”, some professionals may come off as being cold or distant.

The fact of the matter is that if you’re not memorable, your contacts won’t come back to do business with you. People will remember you a lot more if they feel some kind of connection to you. In this article you will find 5 mistakes that are often made when business networking.

1- Rushing the conversation for the quick sale is a huge mistake.

When networking there needs to be a bigger vision of how things work. If the focus is on the immediate sale, you may end up ruining that contact. It may even be that the person to whom you’re talking to is not interested in what you have to offer and this will create an awkward situation. Being in a hurry will close the doors to future people that they could refer to you. Instead of “selling” to the person, focus on developing a long term friendship. This will bring positive results for everyone.

2- One of the biggest mishaps when networking is trying to act like a “know it all”.

No one likes proud and arrogant individuals. Unfortunately some professionals believe that in order to be perceived as an expert they need to talk about their knowledge all the time. They tend to be overbearing in conversations and never admit to shortcomings. Don’t make the same blunders as these “networking train wrecks”.
Being humble goes a long way when creating connections with others.

Don’t be afraid to admit that you might be wrong about something. Many people have a hard time apologizing. If you “stick your foot in your mouth”, don’t hesitate to say that you’re sorry. By adopting the attitude that you can learn from others, you will go much further in your relationships.

3- Don’t have a judgmental attitude towards others.

Understand that other people come from different life experiences and backgrounds. That means that there will be things that you end up disagreeing upon. There shouldn’t be animosity between people just because they have differin

g opinions. Part of being a good networker is being someone who accepts these differences and can simply agree to disagree. Instead of thinking about views that you don’t share, focus on what you do have in common. By having the right mindset your networking efforts will have much better results.
